#14 - Flame War - Redis, Common Clause and our choices in the open source world

-

Getup

In this episode we start with the news of a new unicorn, PagerDuty, which secured an investment of $1.3B with a $90 Million valuation. You can learn more here on Forbes.

Then we dive into our main theme, talking about our choices in adopting open source tools, changes that can occur in projects, and how this can affect us.

We start with the war raised by the change in the Redis license, which closes the proprietary modules of RedisLabs with the Commons Clause. The reason for the change is to try to defend against the actions of large companies, which only take advantage of projects like this, make their millions, and don't give back even lines of code.

We talked about RethinkDB, which almost closed its doors because they no longer had funds to continue, being bought by the CNCF just to keep the project going.

We also touched upon choices and changes within open source projects, like when the internet almost stopped because the "owner" of left-pad in NodeJS removed it from NPM, preventing users from building, which even led to changes in NPM's rules. If you don't remember, see here.

And the recommendations of the week

João: The man in machine — Steve Jobs
Talita: Foundation Trilogy by Isaac Asimov
Guilherme: Games of highly questionable quality (Pororoca Adventures, Corruption, Cabo Daciolo, and Raffa Moreira)
Diogo: Nonsense — airport bathrooms that have no paper towels, only that hand dryer with wind and blue light. First, it doesn't dry anything. Second, how am I supposed to dry my face there? Travel with tissues.
