The valuation is 30x GitHub's annual revenue, approximately 5x what was paid for LinkedIn in 2016. The valuation of the acquisition cannot be completely explained by looking only at GitHub's revenue ($200M). Analysts believe that the market value would be somewhere around $3B, which means Microsoft paid an extra $4B for something. Considering that GitHub has 28M accounts, in this case, developers, we can state that "Developers matter to Microsoft" Who else could or would it make sense for Microsoft to buy? Docker.
