#25 - Predictions for 2019

In this episode, we have each of the Getup team members listing and talking about projects and systems that we believe will grow even more in 2019.

We start with my (João) list:

1. Documentation

3. I still don't understand it much, but I've been hearing about it more and more:

• BPF

• gRPC

4. Service Mesh — This and LinkerD are already very much a reality

5. Envoy

6. Clusters as cattle

7. Cluster auto Provision / Test

8. Hybrid Cloud

9. Crossplane

10. Helm

11. Kustomize — Deploy with helm templates

14. Cri-O - The new default

And this is the list of Diogo Goebel:

1. Three important fronts for 2019:

• Operators for efficiency.

• Monitoring and traceability of services.

• Security, compliance with audit and admission controllers.

2. Less focus on installation and more focus on operation, on day 2.

3. It's not just kubernetes, you will find out that you need Istio, Prometheus, Helm and more.

4. Therefore Kubernetes will continue to be difficult and a fragmented project (it is not a product), requiring effort to understand which tools to bring, keeping track of compatibility between them, especially when performing version updates.

5. That being said, in 2019 there will be a growing perception of the importance or value of distributions, someone offering the famous LTS — long term support.

6. Back to Istio, this should become the next generation of "firewall" for cloud native or modern applications. Traditional approaches such as restrictions or rules by IP are no longer viable.

7. Community will keep growing — 2016 1500 … 2017 4000 … 2018 8000 people at the event.

8. Kubernetes will move further in the direction of becoming a kind of cloud API.

9. Kubernetes finding its way into production environments. We are seeing strong interest in our inbound from companies seeking help to grow their kubernetes environments, taking applications considered more core, of business, pointing to growth in the level of trust and clearer benefits.

10. With larger environments or multiple environments, we will see the emergence or greater importance of control panels, of simpler ways of getting information about what is happening.

11. Greater focus on security, going far beyond RBAC, now using admission controllers, OPA and audit. OPA should become the default policy controller in Kubernetes.

12. The big players will double down on Kubernetes. IBM bought Red Hat, VMWare bought Heptio … you can expect more acquisitions in 2019.
