Kubicast #155 - Non-Stop Kubernetes

Kubernetes can be much easier than you think, check out what these guys who simplified the lives of millions of drivers have to share!

In this episode of Kubicast, we had a super relaxed chat about Kubernetes and distributed systems and the importance of communication between teams.

The technical team from SemParar was with us in this episode to share some of their experiences, and for you who are watching us, take the opportunity to add them to your social networks:

What went down:

Right off the bat, we dived into Kubernetes and its importance in managing clustered systems. We talked about Taints and Tolerations and how they help optimize the distribution of workloads across cluster nodes. And it didn't stop there! We discussed using node selectors to separate production and development environments in the same cluster. Valuable tip for those who want to organize their house!

We entered the controversy of capacity planning. Who has never underestimated the resource consumption of a pod and then saw the cluster suffer? 🙋‍♂️ We shared stories (some almost disastrous) that taught us the importance of constantly monitoring and adjusting resource limits. Lesson learned: you can't mess around with this!

The conversation flowed to resource optimization techniques in development environments. We talked about adopting Knative and OpenShift Serverless to implement scaling to zero. Just imagine, your application scales to zero when not in use, saving that cash on resources. Cool, right?

A highlight was the discussion about how much devs need to understand about Kubernetes. We came to the conclusion that while they don't need to be experts, having a basic understanding makes collaboration with the ops team a lot easier. In the end, understanding where your application runs only brings benefits.

And we couldn't leave out the topic of security. We talked about the importance of always keeping an eye out for vulnerabilities, keeping images updated, and following configuration best practices in the cluster. Security is never too much!

To close, we emphasized the importance of communication between teams. Whether through internal wikis, meetings, or initiatives like chapter leaders, keeping everyone aligned makes all the difference in the day-to-day.

Until next time, guys! 🚀
